Jan C. Verhas was an artist born on my birthday, January 9 1834. He went to a Belgium school (Academy in Avers) and was considered a genre painter. After he finished schooling the government comissioned him to go to Venice to paint a painting called, Velleda et la Bataille de Callao. In the Paris Salon Exposition of 1881 Verhas got a second class medal for his paintings and in 1889 he got a gold medal for the Exposition Universelle. Verhas was elected Chevalier in the Legion of Honor in 1881. He died in 1886.
His paintings can now be found in museums in Anverse, Brussels, Gand, and Liege.
